Windows on the World
Plays and Activities Adapted from Folk Tales from Different Lands
Sylvia Sikundar and Diane Williams

This practical resource book has been developed for classroom teachers, librarians, and other adults working with drama and fine arts programs for young people. In the Street of the Temple Cloth Printers
Dorothy Field

This information book for children follows Vaghi--an Indian temple cloth printer--and his family through a few days in their lives, revealing a glimpse into the traditional way of life of Indian craftspeople in the ancient town of Ahmadabad, in the province of Gujarat, India. The book describes the processes Vaghi and his family use to create temple cloths using carved blocks and dye baths. Through the text and the fine photographs that illustrate the book, and through the images from the temple cloths themselves, a vivid picture of an artisan's life is created. An added treat for readers is that the Hindu stories represented by the images on the cloths are related as Vaghi works.

Dorothy Field is a textile artist who lives in Cobble Hill, B.C. when she isn't travelling in Asia. She lived for a year in Ahmadabad, where she collaborated on this book with Vaghi, his family, and other dwellers in the street of the temple cloth printers. Teachers will find this book especially useful in social studies classes on India, in language arts and fine arts programs, and in any class with a multicultural focus.

"A refreshing change from the predictable format of much contemporary children's non-fiction. Field's writing style is direct and not all condescending, making this book a first-rate look at the subject for adults, too. Try it with grade 5/6 students to enrich discussions on India, family life, religion, storytelling, young artists, traditional textiles, and changing technology."-Quill & Quire

Alternatives to Racism Program

Pacific Educational Press publishes a series of anti-racist educational books for use in elementary schools in cooperation with the Alternatives to Racism Society, a non-profit, research-oriented society dedicated to reducing racism through education. It is a flexible series of publications designed to be integrated into existing language arts, social studies, and personal development curricula, or each unit can be used as a separate teaching module.

Ambiguity and unfamiliar experiences lead to misunderstandings and prejudice. These books deal with this issue directly, leading students to appreciate diversity and learn that there are multiple ways of seeing the world. They include the experiences of a variety of ethnocultural groups, moving away from the Euro-centric point of view that has dominated North American education. As the age level progresses, the units introduce increasingly complex ideas and information about the social mechanisms that create and contribute to racism, enabling students to understand and reject discriminatory attitudes at both the individual and societal level.

"Teachers looking for materials to support anti-racist curriculum will be delighted to discover an excellent series of print resources, the Alternatives to Racism Program."-Ontario Public School Teachers Federation News

Many Threads: Weaving a Country
Edited by Wilma Maki

This book is a collection of authentic writing for students in grades 5-7 about the wide range of people's experiences as immigrants to Canada. A carefully chosen selection of excerpts and short pieces from a variety of genres-poetry, novels, journals, newspapers-is included. They are arranged thematically so that readers can explore the reasons people have for leaving their original homes, their journeys to a new land, the strange, often exciting, and sometimes unpleasant experiences they have adjusting to a new social milieu, and the impact they have on this milieu. Accounts from both past and present add a historical dimension to the book. The original writing and documents are accompanied by short factual accounts to provide context for readers. Immigrants from Cuba, Poland, Vietnam, Scotland, India, Hong Kong, Russia, Finland, Africa, Ukraine, Japan, and China are represented and their new homes range from large Canadian cities such as Toronto and Vancouver to small cities like Yorkton, Saskatchewan to rural communities such as Cape Breton in Nova Scotia and Salt Spring Island in British Columbia.

Lorna Williams

This educational package is among the first to present a First Nations perspective systematically in a school text and teacher's guide. The traditional teaching method of the medicine wheel has been incorporated into the learning process, emphasizing the opportunities to perceive, think, feel, and act in the learning experience. The guide discusses racism and stereotyping, and develops the themes explored in the student text: the passing on of knowledge through legends and ceremonies, and the ideas of diversity, interaction, change, and adaptation.
